The Marietta men’s team won the Marietta Shrine Tournament this past weekend by defeating a tough University of Mary Washington 87-82 in the Championship game. A shame George Washington University wasn't invited to participate in the tournament for a complete historic family affair. The Pioneers put their undefeated streak on the line this weekend when they head to Grand Rapids, Michigan for the Great Lakes Invitational. On Saturday they will take on the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College, who have a killer alumni list. One such grad is still waiting on their reunion as they are listed as an unsolved murder victim.

Prior to its recent narrow loss to Mt. Union in football last Saturday, Marietta College had been the only school in the NCAA (all divisions) with an undefeated football team and undefeated volleyball team. The mens and womens basketball teams both won their season openers as they look to continue the dominance that Pioneer sports have exhibited this year. The men, after putting up 118 points against Mount Aloysius last weekend, host the annual Marietta Shrine Tournament this weekend at the famed Ban Johnson Arena when Maryville, Mary Washington and The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire all square off. A young squad that includes eight Sophomores and six Freshmen, Marietta is looking to for another strong run in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) where they were picked fourth in the preseason poll. When asked about the ranking, head coach Jon Vanderwal said he has “never put much stock in preseason polls, to be honest.” Always makes me a little nervous when someone needs to add that expression at the end of a sentence. Gotta believe he is speaking the truth given fact that in past 40 years of NCAA D1 only 6 preseason number 1 teams have finished as national champs.

The Marietta College Pioneers are gearing up for their season opener when they host the Mounties of Mount Aloysius College this weekend. Word is, Mount Aloysius have penciled in Dudley Do-Right as their starting point guard. Marietta hopes to defuse the Mounties’ offense by utilizing Snidely Whiplash’s smothering defense.
