1. Troy gets offensive firepower from several different players. Senior guard Tayton Conerway is a steady, consistent, and battle-tested contributor. Sophomore forwards Myles Rigsby and Thomas Dowd are both regularly double-digit men in points and rebounds.
2. Troy belongs to the Sun Belt, which was the first Division I college conference to install the shot clock. For this, America will be forever grateful to this little league and have its back come tournament time.
3. Troy has won a previous national championship. During Spring Break 2003, I guided Troy State to a football national title in NCAA Football 2002, their first year in the game. In the days before NIL and the portal, this plucky Troy Squad relied heavily on create-a-players with such names as "CLAYTON TRUTOR," "NAKED MIKE," and "BRUCE HORNSBY." All three had mohawks, single-bar facemasks, and wore cowboy collars.
4. Jack Hawkins, Jr. has been the Chancellor of Troy University since 1989. I appreciate a school with a steady hand guiding the ship.
5. Troy has had many prominent alumni including Kirk deViere, former North Carolina State Senator for District 19; Adria Montgomery-Klein, contestant on Big Brother 5; and several former Arena Football League players.
