Nova Southeastern Basketball - Updates And More by Ally Montgomery

1/5/2025

Nova Southeastern men’s team secured a win against Eckard with a final score of 113-74. Nova had  7 players score in the double digits, led by MJ Iraldi who scored an impressive 31 points. The players were proud of themselves and their scoring, but they did say breaking double digits made participating in the post-game tradition of showing their moms how many points they scored by holding up that name number of fingers extremely difficult.

The players ended up resorting to taking off their shoes and including their toes in the display to accurately relay the information.

MJ Iraldi was especially frustrated when he realized he had scored more points than the number of fingers and toes he has and was seen shrugging solemnly at his mom as he left the court.

It’s said the team is now discussing new ways to tell their mothers how many points they scored and are considering investing in a set of abacuses or perhaps a bag of marbles they can put in jars with their names decoratively painted on them.

They say nobody’s perfect, but sometimes sharks are. Such was the case during the Nova Southeastern and Emmanuel University basketball game for Tyler Eberhart who went 13 for 13 in shots for the night. Thanks to a second half surge NSU came out on top with a final score of 115-98 completing their 69th straight win at the Rick Case Arena.

Tensions were high during the game when at the half NSU trailed Emmanuel 55-52 and this was only compounded by the fact that Nova Southeastern Women’s swim team was competing in a meet against Barry at the exact same time. Many spectators were confused as to why NSU would schedule home games for two equally funded and valued sports at the same time creating an impossible choice for fans. One NSU supporter said “Sharks live in water, not land, so why would they put their home sport up against a silly ball game? It’s just not natural.” Luckily, the women’s swim team also came up on top at 249-83 against Barry, so all NSU Shark fans were happy at the end of the day.

The Sharks Keep Chomping Away Wins in a Still Undefeated Season

The Nova Southeastern Sharks men's basketball team continues to uphold its #1 ranking for NCAA D2 teams with an 8-0 season including their most recent win against the Fort Lauderdale Eagles at 123-78. All 12 members of the team put points on the board with the highest scorer being Ryker Cisarik with 22 points. This marked the 67th straight win at NSU’s home Rick Case Arena.

The next time the Sharks play is December 14th at 4pm EST against Barry University. Coincidentally the next team the Nova Southeastern #4 women's swim team (of which my sister is a member) competes against is also Barry University on December 19th and 20th. My sister Hannah Montgomery is a breaststroker (her events are the 100m and 200m breaststroke and she is on the medley relay team) which is like the equivalent of being a shooting guard in basketball.

The women's swim team have not been as fortunate as the undefeated men's basketball team this year, but are still very strong 4-1 in the season following their 2nd NCAA D2 Championship win in a row in 2024.
